Summary0009282: Check for Render frame dependencies
DescriptionI wished to test renderfame on my mac on ouch, pdflatex missing. I guess that as for Ghostscript, Scribus should check if Tex dependencies are there and deactivate renderframe tool or at least display a message if they are not there.

I have added some checks in 1.5.0 revision 15434, if no configs, or no commands or none of the commands are callable.. then it pops up an error.

Please test in 1.5.0svn.. if ok, I'll backport to 1.3.9svn. Christoph will suggest a better warning msg.

Also, note, the rescan button in new prefs also checks for some common pdflatex paths..

would be an option to deactivate the rendering for those external application which are not installed?

currently i can't create any render frame just because povray (or any other tool) is not installed (or wrongly defined).

an alternative would be to pop up the error when trying (and failing) to show the content for a specific external too.

It doesnt check they are all there, just one.. that will mean that scribus cannot find the apps that you have defined.

well, it used to find latex...

pdflatex is defined as "pdflatex --interaction nonstopmode"

and

$ which pdflatex
/usr/bin/pdflatex
$ pdflatex --version
pdfTeX 3.1415926-1.40.10-2.2 (TeX Live 2009/Debian)
kpathsea version 5.0.0

there is no reason for scribus not to find it!

What about the following solution:

If none of the pre-configured programs is found, display the following message when a user wants to insert a Render Frame:

"Scribus cannot find any of the currently pre-configured external programs that are required to work with Render Frames (pdflatex, lilypond, gnuplot, povray. Please install at least one of them or, if you have already done so, use File > Preferences > External Tools to add the correct path to program's executable."

If one or more pre-configured programs are missing (but at least one is installed and found), the user should see a warning like this:

"The programs x, y, z are pre-configured for use with Render Frames, but either Scribus did not find them or they aren't installed on your computer. If you think you will need one of them, please install it and click the "Rescan" button under File > Preferences > External Tools. If the program is already installed, you can use the "Change Command" button under File > Preferences > External Tools > Render Frames to add the actual path to the program's executable file."

The latter needs an option like "Disable Warning" or something similar.

... i guess a user should never see a warning like this...

tested the new patch. i could create a pdflatex rendered frame... works ok.

i had a sensible alert when choosing povray.

i just wonder what happens when the default tool is missing, but i'm too tired to test it.

thanks for the good work!

pygmee & christoph, can you please test?

ale.. is this ok to backport to 1.3.9svn?

I have all the programs installed in standard directories (/usr/bin) but i get the message, and i think i shouldn't. Build today on rev 15441

i don't have the feeling that the solution is already rock solid... but if the code behind it is clean and can easily be extended in the future i think it's worth to backport it...

well, it may also depend much on how long it will take to get 1.6 out...

pygmee.. please nuke your prefs, or at least the external tools section

Yep, better now. The error message is displayed only the first time we try to use the external tool. Is that right ?

No, every time until the settings are corrected.

I checked out 1.5svn, built a fresh version, deleted the old one and installed the new one. I also deleted the ./scribus folder, but I'm still getting the old error message.

For some reason render frames started working for me recently. Up till then I was getting an error. I think it may have been something with my migration from OSX 10.9 to 10.10

So on
1.5.1 r20169 Render Frames Work
1.5.0 r20099 Render Frames Do not Work (does not find pdflatex)
1.4.5 Render Frames Do not work (does not find pdflatex)

Closing duplicate 0013596 (Scribus 1.4.5 Render Frames does not work out of the box, needs to be set manually)

See 0013596:0037961
and 0013596:0037962
For OS 10.11.2 with SIP enabled (default), I followed the above suggestion but again it produced no result. However, since the terminal query "which pdflatex" returned
/Library/TeX/texbin/pdflatex
I entered

/Library/TeX/texbin/pdflatex "--interaction nonstopmode"

(note quotes!) and the render frame is now working. I have not yet tried this with Scribus 1.5.

Thanks to Kunda for the suggestion.

This needs to be fixed before 1.4.6 comes out (or whatever the last release of 1.4.x will be)

Still an issue in Manjaro 16.10 using latest SVN HEAD r21498
Looks like pdflatex is in the texlive package on Arch Linux. So we need to have a dependency or a check that if render frames get triggered and the pdflatex binary isn't installed that Scribus asks us if we'd like to install it
