I cannot reproduce your issue with current code. Could you provide a sample document, please?

just made some more tests – it looks as the problem occurs only when the text is aligned to the baseline grid.

It looks like your current baseline grid spacing is too small vs your font size. With your current font size, there is one line of text every two lines of grid.

This case prevent us from layouting the drop cap properly at paragraph start. We would need to layout it after the first N lines, but that's not possible as we need to layout the drop cap right at paragraph start to layout properly the next lines.

i often use a half sized grid – it has many benefits for me. as i don't really need drop caps, its no big thing for me to avoid a mix of the two things. (but other users should know about this limitation…)

It is still happening as of today (I am using the current trunk build from the Ubuntu PPA).

I believe I understand to some degree jghali's explanation, but I am trying to layout a text with a baseline height tall enough for the paragraph text and the dropcap still acts weirdly. I am attaching screenshots.

looks like something different. could you show your settings for the drop caps?

Thank you for the quick answer!
These are the settings for the dropcaps in the paragraph style, and for the source character style the dropcap uses.

the issue is caused by the strongly increased font size of the character style used for the effect.
i don't really understand the relationship, but i can induce the problem by either increasing one of the font sizes (character style for the effect or for the paragraph) or by decreasing the baseline grid (but not by changing a fixed spacing…)
