Summary0001354: pdf size too large to send by email
Descriptionwhen making a basic 'title, three column page' file for pdf, the size was 6.2MB. this huge file is hardly easy to transport across to other readers.

Whereas, if I print the same file by email, the size is less than 1MB!!!

Why is is taking up so much space?

Turned on compression? What dpi did you use? What image types and sizes were included? I can fit a 28 page full colour magazine in 10mb.

No response? What kind of images did you use? How large were they? You dont say what Scribus version you are using either.

Compression?? how to?
I didn't include image types, as there were no images included. (started with images, file size was huge, took out images, and file size is still large. ie, the smallest is 6.2)
dpi was 300.
version; not too sure, but think if there hasn't been an update recently, then it is the latest.

do you have an example of a finished scribus magazine in pdf; that is online?

http://www.rccaustralia.com/magazines/20040708col.pdf 12mb. 28 pages, full colour.

Check the version in Help About. Please make a new directory, open the file and File->Collect for output into that directory, including fonts. tar.bz2 up the whole lot and tell me what size it is. Another question, are you using large non latin fonts, eg asian, indic, arabic etc? If you are embedded those that might be the cause of the large file.

thanks, be compressing at some point soon.
still fonts shouldn't be that large for just a page.

If you embed the whole font file it will be. Please me know the fonts you have included and their sizes. Try subsetting, which at this stage converts to outlines.

Can you at least answer some of the questions asked?

I am replying to this post because I think my problem/work-around relates to the same issue - at least, it has the same symptoms.

I produce a monthly magazine using Scribus, approx 30pp, small colour images throughout. The pdf of Issue 1 was about 2MB, as were the two page samples I produced (not sure of the version number, but I installed it Sept 04). Issue 2 (Scribus 1.2) came out at 6.1MB.

I played around with the compression for Issue 2, tried deleting all the images, but that pdf size wouldn't go down.

Issue 3, I've taken more time to narrow down what's causing the jump (instead of just blaming the new installation). If I make the complete 30pp .sla file by appending 2-4pp files, the pdf size jumps to 6MB+. If I use fonts not defined by my standard paragraph styles, the size jumps from a few hundred KB to 6MB+. If I define a paragraph style for each new font that I want to use, the size stays down at about 2MB.

So is this something that needs to be sorted out in the program, my settings, or is my work-around the way I should have been doing it all along?

Somebody please attach a PDF that you believe is too large. I will examine it with some PDF analysys tools, determine what is taking up the space, and we can go from there.

If we can't get some hard info on this there's not much we can do.

im closing as excessive size in PDF is not an issue compared to normal prepress PDFs
