Summary | 0004351: Incorrect Kerning / Automatic Tracking
Description | One of the best features of high-end publishing software is the ability to automatically track characters to evenly fill a frame so there are no large gaps between words when using block format. Does, or will, Scribus have this feature? Thank you. (This is a duplicate, the fix applies to the problem illustrated by the screenshot)

To a point, yes. I personally hate it if words are spaced out just to justify text. IMO switching to flush left is typographically far superior in those cases. The new layout system will avoid most of those ugly gaps though by a) optimizing linebreaks over a whole paragraph. b) extending glyphs by upto 2 % to fill a line c) increase letter spacing (I don't really want it, but I guess I'll just implement it as a last resort and set a maximum of 5 % as default. People who like spaced out text can then set that maximum to 100 % if they like -- shudder :-) ) |
|
Please make sure that the characters do not meld together, see letter_spacing.png |

hhielscher: wrong in 1.3.3.4? Also in 1.3.3.6cvs? If yes, this should be a separate bug. I can't recall we changed anything regarding letterspacing between 1333 and 1334... |
|
Sorry, I got confused by the scribus naming scheme. I was comparing new layout engine from cvs (1.3.4) with the stable developement version (1.3.3.x). |
